Our aluminum 520 rear sprockets are CAD
designed for an authentic style and CNC
machined to exact tolerances to insure
long sprocket life and smooth operation on
your machine. Each sprocket is hand
finished providing an exceptional end
product. All OES sprockets are industrial
hard coat anodized (type 3) to add extra
strength to the surface of the aluminum-
this makes the sprocket more resistant to
wear and surface corrosion.
Industrial hard coat anodizing, or type 3 anodizing,
is the process that is used to harden the surface of
our sprockets. The sprockets are added to a cooled
electrolytic bath where an electrical charge is then
passed through the bath for a specified time. This
process builds up an aluminum oxide layer on the
sprockets that is gemstone hard, so the end result is
a sprocket that has better wear resistance, but is
lighter than a steel sprocket. Hard anodizing also
allows the aluminum to accept a dye, such as black
or gold color.
Hard anodizing should not be confused with type 1
anodizing, which does not result in the same surface
hardness as hard anodizing (type 3).
